I read somewhere that his friends told him he must be paranoid, when he expressed the belief that the FBI was watching him. However, (this is very ironic and sad) he really was secretly under FBI surveillance at that time. Also, even if he was ill, it seems to me a real tragedy that he was given electroshock treatment. (I read somewhere else that he said it had affected his memory and thinking. This may be why he committed suicide, since he apparently believed he had lost the ability to write.) I wish he had gotten better care. Maybe he might have been able to sort out truth from imagination and gotten better.

It seems there are a lot of people who admit to not liking Hemingway these days, but I enjoyed The Sun Also Rises, Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls immensely.
